History:
The Festival began in 1999, and since that time has seen an increasing audience from the West Kootenay region, as well as Fernie, Revelstoke, Kelowna, Spokane, WA and Canmore, AB. A not-for-profit society was established in 2000, and has been registered with the Registrar of Companies and in good standing since that date. There is a volunteer Board of Directors who governs this society, made up of community minded, creative and film-savvy individuals from the Rossland/Trail communities.
Last year, the RMFF brought in more than 1100 people from around the Kootenay Region, the Northwestern US, and as far away as Whistler BC and Canmore AB. In the previous seven years, we have seen continued local support with approximately 900-1100 people attending the event throughout the weekend from the same approximate geographical areas mentioned above.
The broad spectrum of films shown at our festival has evolved over the past 9 years to include films from both a mountain culture and independent sphere. Life in an alpine community involves a collective of people from all different backgrounds and who have varied interests. This festival exemplifies this. Targeting young filmmakers from the Kootenay region and giving them a venue.
About Rossland:
Perched high in the mountains of the West Kootenays, Rossland is a small but thriving skiing and mountain biking destination town. Home of Red Mountain Ski Resort, Rossland is known for its expert skiing terrain and great tree skiing. Rossland is quickly becoming known as a great place to live as it has a great community that fosters the arts, recreation and community life in general.
The Rossland Miner's Hall is a cherished historical building that hosts many events each year and is the home of the RMFF for the 9th year running.
